Rambling in the woods

Forest Discovery School

We are please to announce that we have started our Forest Discovery School courses at our own woodlands. This facility is available to all children attending Abbeywood Tots from March 2011.

Forest School uses the outdoor environment to help all children learn. Children are encouraged to develop independence skills, improve their decision making, and raise their self-esteem through small achievable tasks.

Forest Discovery School sessions are child led to accommodate individual learning styles and schemas, children are encouraged to make choices, and follow their own learning. The adult's role is facilitative and enables observation and assessment of the children by the qualified Forest School Leaders.

Teachers and child care workers involved with children who undertake Forest School report significant improvements in independence, self esteem, social skills and concentration levels.

The Forest Experience

The forest environment is an excellent enviroment for children to learn new skills and to gain an understanding of nature and with each step taken something new to see, hear and to talk about. Foraging for insects and learning about nature is a fantastic way to spend those special days at nursery.

The need for a greater understanding of forest life is vital. Forests provide environmentally sustainable building materials and many other products essential to daily life. Wood products require less energy to manufacture and maintain than other non-renewable materials and they can be easily recycled. Woodlands benefit our environment and provide a great setting for educational activities and all our children enjoy the freedom to explore and discover new experiences and sounds in this precious natural habitat.
